Why Live in Union County - Part 1

July 12th, 2007 by Bud

Union County NC SealThere are very good reasons to live in Union County, NC. Just pick a township, any one of them and you too can enjoy the same things my family and myself enjoy about living in Union County.

Initially we were drawn to Union County because of two things, first was the lower tax rates than neighboring Mecklenburg County. If you live anywhere in Union County you will be paying lower taxes on any property of the same value than Mecklenburg/Charlotte. This translates to more real spending dollars, and can’t we all use more spending dollars! In some townships it may be just a few cents less, but it is less.

The second reason was the ability to buy more home for the money than in Mecklenburg County. Property values in Union County are on the rise as it has become one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, according to statistics from the US Census Bureau.

The history of Union County is as rich as it is diverse. Originally inhabited by the Waxhaw Indians. A smallpox epidemic diminished the numbers of the Waxhaws so much that they left the area to join other neighboring tribes. Shortly after this settlers from Virginia, Pennsylvania and other areas of North Carolina began to settle in the county.

In 1843, the first Board of County Commissioners, appointed by the General Assembly selected an area in the center of the county to be called Monroe, as the county seat. Monroe was incorporated in 1843. Monroe was named for James Monroe, the country’s fifth president.

The area has seen an increase in new homes, schools, and businesses, because of the phenomenal growth. More residents are finding that Union County is a great place to work and live with new community facilities like the Aquatic Center in Monroe. In the next few days we will look at other reasons why you would also find out that Union County is a great place to live.
